Based on 5 ReviewsGain real work experience while earning your degree as a Drexel Dragon. Originally founded in 1891 as the Drexel Institute of Art, Science and Industry, Drexel University is an urban school in Philadelphia that puts the practical arts and sciences at the forefront of education. Fittingly, the school is known for creating paid work experience opportunities for students throughout Philly, the fifth-largest city in America, and for taking advantage of everything the city has to offer, making sure students do too. Drexel has a long list of courses that require field trips, or working with community members, or visiting local historic or cultural attractions (like the Academy of Natural Sciences). Plus, no other college in Philly has a co-op program like Drexel. The Drexel student’s life is the city life. The school sits only a few blocks away from Philly’s extensive transportation system, and the whole neighborhood is a hub for college students. Popular among business, engineering, and art students, Drexel has about 16,000 undergrads (~25,000 students total), around 74 percent of whom live off campus.
While Drexel isn’t the most affordable college around, you get what you pay for. For many students, co-op education is the reason to invest in a degree from Drexel. Most undergraduate students spend half of their college time doing traditional classroom activities, and the other half working in their fields. On average, these students can make more than $16,000 for a single 6-month co-op experience. Each student can complete up to three co-ops total. In addition to organizing co-op, Drexel provides career counseling, career skills workshops, and on-campus interview opportunities for students in their final year. And according to PayScale.com, Drexel graduates make an average salary of $54,800 in their early careers.
Drexel gets all the military-friendly school awards. It's been named a top military-friendly university by GI Jobs for the past six years in a row, and also made the U.S. News and World Report's list of the Top Military Friendly Colleges in both 2014 and 2015. These honors are well-deserved. Drexel’s Office of Veteran Student Services is just outstanding. More than an office, it’s a campus-wide initiative wholly devoted to making student life easier for vets. In addition to managing comprehensive financial assistance, the office plans a special Veterans’ Orientation, veterans’ networking events, philanthropic events to support military families, and campus-wide celebrations for military holidays, such as Veterans Day and Memorial Day.
