Indiana University, or IU, is a public university that was founded in 1820 in the college town of Bloomington, Indiana, just outside of Indianapolis. Founded as a seminary, IU is now a large research institution with a total undergraduate enrollment of about 40,000 students. The school’s campus covers over 1,000 acres with buildings made of locally-quarried Indiana Limestone, which was used to construct the historic core campus during the Great Depression. IU has a student-to-faculty ratio of 16:1, and Indiana residents receive in-state tuition.
IU’s campus includes over 20 specialty libraries, four museums, and a massive athletics facility with an Olympic-sized swimming pool, a gym, and a track and field center for student-athletes. IU has 16 schools and over 500 majors to choose from, with internationally-renowned departments such as the Jacobs School of Music and the Kelley School of Business.
The Indiana University Hoosiers compete in the BIG10 conference and maintain a strong local rivalry with their neighbors, the Purdue Boilermakers. The Hoosier basketball team gained notoriety after Angelo Pizzo’s film Hoosiers debuted in 1986, chronicling the team’s meteoric rise to the national championship in 1954. Notable alumni include former Secretary of Defence Robert Gates, Mythbusters host Jamie Hyneman, and American songwriter Hoagy Carmichael.

Oh, the choices! With more than 520 undergraduate and graduate degree programs, this public institution is bound to have an academic program that fits your passion. IU is committed to getting students off to a solid start with its nationally recognized freshmen programs, residential learning communities, and technology infrastructure and support. The campus itself – featuring Indiana limestone buildings dating back to the late nineteenth century–- frequently receives its own accolades as one of the most beautiful in the United States. More than 20,000 pansies annually greet students returning from Spring Break, and the Arbor Day Foundation has honored IU as a Tree Campus USA University for its dedication to forestry. IU’s host city, Bloomington, has the qualities of a large city but the easy pace of a small town. Kirkwood Avenue links the campus directly to the downtown area and all of its coffeehouses, restaurants, music festivals, and other cultural opportunities. Additionally, B-town (as locals call it) boasts a variety of lakes, trails, and parks perfect for recreational activities. Every student can find a niche at IU. Roughly 22 percent of undergrads choose to pledge fraternities and sororities. Others join one (or more!) of the 600-plus student organizations. Students and alumni alike gather to cheer on the Hoosiers at Big Ten sporting events. Thousands of fans also turn out each April for Little 500, the nation’s largest collegiate bike race and the inspiration for the classic movie “Breaking Away.”
IU’s career center is eager for students to generate a plan for life after graduation. It divides the process into nine specific steps – from career exploration and choosing a major to building experience to learning how to search for a job or apply to grad school. The campus has 13 different career centers, each dedicated to its own discipline(s). Such specialization allows counselors to be experts and build industry-specific relationships with employers. The school also offers internship courses in which students can gain real-world experience and academic credit at the same time. And the opportunities for help don’t stop after graduation – IU alumni can drop by for career-related assistance, attend networking events, and sign up for webinars on workplace issues.
