Isabel Saint Malo de Alvarado, vice president of Panama, received a master’s degree in business administration from the university. A number of Florida state representatives and circuit judges also are Nova Southeastern alumni.
Palm trees and lakes help give this 314-acre campus in suburban Fort Lauderdale a pleasant, Floridian feel. The Don Taft University Center is Nova Southeastern’s social hub. Some of its highlights include a 4,500-seat arena, a state-of-the-art gym, a black box theater, a food court, and a leisure pool. In the Carl DeSantis Building you can take your lunch from its popular Einstein Bros. Bagels and hang out in the beautiful sunny atrium.
As part of its commitment to advancing education in Florida, Nova Southeastern operates regional campuses in Jacksonville, Miami, Orlando, Tampa, Palm Beach, Fort Myers and Miramar. It also has a branch in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The university offers an extensive number of undergraduate and graduate online programs. As a participant in the Southern Regional Education Board’s Electronic Campus, Nova Southeastern’s online programs and courses are subject to review and certification to ensure quality.
Both the men’s and women’s golf teams have enjoyed great success over the past few years. The Lady Sharks took home the NCAA Division II national title from 2009-2012, while the men did the same in 2012 and 2015. The women’s rowing team captured the national championship in 2013. Nova Southeastern also offers men’s and women’s teams in basketball, cross country, track & field, soccer, and swimming & diving. The university is a member of the Sunshine State Conference.
The most popular majors at Nova Southeastern include health professions and related programs, business and management, biological and biomedical sciences, psychology, and education. Its internationally-known marine science program has been adding to knowledge about oceans since 1966, including research on how global warming might change species dispersal patterns. The Huizenga College of Business and Entrepreneurship is home to the largest MBA and master of accounting programs in Florida. The university’s Mailman Segal Center for Human Development has a long history of serving individuals with autism and their families.
In 2015, Forbes ranked Fort Lauderdale second on its list of “Happiest Cities for Young Professionals.” Factors contributing to the rating included growth opportunities, compensation, benefits, work-life balance, career advancement, and job security. As might be expected, tourism is among the region’s major industries. However, Fort Lauderdale continues to establish itself as one of the fastest-growing markets for global trade and is a leader in South Florida’s emerging “Internet Coast” of more than 6,000 high-tech firms.
A diverse economy in the Greater Fort Lauderdale region leads to high demand for a variety of skillsets. Educators can find employment with the Broward County School District, Nova Southeastern University, and Kaplan. Memorial Healthcare System, Holy Cross Medical Group, and North Broward Hospital District hire health science grads. American Express and Bank of America are major financial employers. Communications giant Sun-Sentinel Co. publishes the largest-circulation newspaper in South Florida and operates WSFL-TV. Other major employers include automotive retailer AutoNation, software developer Citrix, and advertising agency Zimmerman.
Between the great weather and the promising job opportunities, students often choose to remain in Fort Lauderdale after graduation. The city is home to more than 172,000 residents, and about a quarter of households include children. While singles may enjoy residential options near the bustling downtown area, plenty of family-friendly options exist in smaller neighborhoods, including planned communities and waterfront properties.
With 3,000 hours of annual sunshine, outdoor activities rule! Fort Lauderdale boasts seven miles of beaches, 31 golf courses, and the Intracoastal Waterway lined with marinas, waterfront restaurants, and nightspots. The Broward Center for the Performing Arts hosts Broadway productions as well as ballets, operas, and children’s shows. The city also is home to the Museum of Discovery and Science, the NSU Art Museum, and the Antique Car Museum.
While Nova Southeastern University’s student body is heavily female, the city as a whole is relatively equal. Many singles appreciate the ethnic diversity of the area. And if your Romeo or Juliet isn’t among Fort Lauderdale’s residents, perhaps you’ll bump into him or her on the beach when throngs of bathing suit-clad singles drop by for Spring Break.
