Based on 17 ReviewsFrom the small screen to the governor’s mansion, Texas A&M’s alumni can be found making contributions in diverse professional arenas. In the political world, graduates include former Texas Governor Rick Perry, former Arkansas Governor Frank D. White, and Will Wynn, the former mayor of Austin. In the entertainment world, alumni include “American Idol” contestant Jason Castro, Grammy winning country musician Lyle Lovett, romance novelist Geralyn Dawson, and Emmy-winning actor Rip Torn. The business community is also well-represented with graduates such as Lowry Mays, the co-founder of Clear Channel Communications.
Over 7,200 students choose to live on the College Station campus, which is in an urban setting that spans 5,200 acres. Students can live in traditional residence halls or university-owned apartments. In addition to choosing a residence that makes them feel comfortable among their peers, students take advantage of the learning opportunities that the school’s Department of Residence Life bring to their living quarters. For example, Hullabaloo Hall hosts the “Dinner with a Prof” events, where students are able to have a casual, open dialogue with faculty members in front of the building’s fireplace. College Station also offers tutoring opportunities in residence halls to give students extra help in subjects like political science, math, chemistry, and history.
Texas A&M University-College Station has online degree programs in disciplines such as engineering, statistics, public health, and education. For example, students in the Dwight Look College of Engineering can earn online degrees in aerospace, industrial, mechanical, and petroleum engineering; the School of Public Health has a distance epidemiology degree; and the College of Education and Human Development has online degrees in human resource development, adult education, and PK-12 educational administration.
Texas A&M’s athletics includes 20 varsity sports teams that compete at the NCAA Division 1-A level. The school has 650 student athletes who play sports ranging from basketball to golf to swimming to horse riding.
Over the years, Texas A&M University graduates have gone on to make significant strides in academic disciplines. For example, the school has minted Nobel Prize winners in chemistry (Derek Barton, 1969; Dudley R. Herschbach, 1986; Robert H. Grubbs, 1995), physics (David Lee, 1996; Sheldon Lee Glashow 1979), and economics (Vernon L. Smith, 2002). In addition, A&M’s schools are making contributions to their respective disciplines. The College of Architecture set forth the Hurricane Katrina initiative, which includes faculty members’ white papers that address natural disaster preparedness. The Mays Business School publishes the quarterly “Business Research in Action,” an up-to-date report of the studies being conducted by the school’s various business centers (Center for International Business Studies, Center for Retailing Studies, the Center for Human Resource Management, the Real Estate Center, and the Center for New Ventures and Entrepreneurship). The Baylor College of Dentistry received a grant from the National Institutes of Health's National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research that has allowed the school to incorporate clinical research into its curriculum.
