Based on 0 ReviewsLook into TCC alumni stories and you’ll find a lot of young people with bright futures. Before he was impersonating President Barack Obama as a cast member on Saturday Night Live, Jay Pharaoh was studying at TCC by day and doing stand-up comedy by night. He earned his associate’s shortly before his comedy career took off. Bria Kelly also found fame when she sang her way into the top 10 performers on season 6 of The Voice. Kelly has opened for country superstar Miranda Lambert and has sung the national anthem at the start of NFL games. Her year of TCC coursework also helped her to accomplish another one of her dreams—to pursue a bachelor’s degree in graphic arts. Alum Joe Cook is no stranger to being on screen either. He is a reporter and sports anchor for news station in Fairbanks, Alaska. At TCC Cook was able to ramp up his communication skills by taking Introduction to Public Speaking. Also, Michelle Alderman, a 2010 graduate of the interior design program, landed herself on the 30 under 30 list published by the National Kitchen and Bath Association. For these graduates and more, TCC has served as a springboard for career success.
TCC has four campuses all within a half-hour drive, and each comes with its own personality. Looking to study in a city? Check out the Norfolk campus. You’ll be just blocks away from shops, riverfront parks, and the theatre district. You can also catch shows on campus at the Roper Performing Arts Center, a restored 1920’s vaudeville theatre. The theatre gives off a vintage vibe, but it’s outfitted with modern theatre technology. Lights, camera, action! Then there’s the Portsmouth campus. It’s just across the river from Norfolk. This campus houses the Visual Arts Center where as a studio arts student you can practice glassblowing in the “hot shop” rooftop studio. Or, if you’re pursuing nursing, you can practice your bedside manner in the lab by working with a blinking, breathing “patient” simulator before heading into the field to help real patients. The Chesapeake campus, also known as the green campus, is just 15 minutes away from Portsmouth. This campus sits along protected wetlands, which you can admire from your classroom buildings (no daydreaming, though!). Students who study horticulture can nurture plant growth in four on-campus greenhouses and an outdoor laboratory. If you’d rather study a skilled trade like automotive technology, you can get hands-on automotive repair experience in the stunning Regional Automotive Center. You might even service an eighteen-wheeler in one of the 15 project bays. Last is the largest campus of the bunch: Virginia Beach. You’ll be wowed by the student center, which opened in 2013. It’s a building on stilts—really! It’s propped above a serene pond, which you can admire from the many lounge spaces inside. In fact, each campus recently opened newly constructed or renovated student centers. Even as a two-year institution TCC is committed to creating a rich campus community for its students at all locations.
Ready to step up and take charge in your career field? You can earn an associate’s degree in management online. No matter where you live, you’ll be ready to climb the career ladder in two short years. And starting in fall 2016, TCC will offer eight more associate’s degree and certificate programs fully online: accounting specialist certificate, business administration, social sciences, liberal arts, general studies, industrial technology, criminal justice, and criminal justice career studies certificate. If you’re looking for short-term professional development, check out the programs TCC offers through the Center for Workforce Solutions. The available classes and training programs are valuable in just about any major field. Want to master Photoshop, learn Spanish for the workplace, or become a chartered tax professional from your couch? You can!
TCC doesn’t offer intercollegiate athletics at this time, but that doesn’t mean you won’t have plenty of opportunities to be active. Every student center has a fitness center with cardio and strength training machines. Group fitness classes are offered on the Virginia Beach campus every weekday. Start your fitness journey or take it to the next level with Cycling, Zumba, Boot Camp, Chisel (where you can “get ripped”), or pilates and ballet inspired Flow. The other campuses offer group fitness classes from time to time, too. But if exercising doesn’t scratch your itch for athletic competition, the student centers host basketball tournaments and indoor soccer and volleyball games. The Virginia Beach campus offers basketball and dodgeball as intramural sports, and you can explore the process for starting new intramural sports once you’re a student. Students can check out balls and equipment as well, so grab the gang and set up your very own tournament!
TCC works hard to make their programs affordable, accessible, and convenient. Need proof? Here’s a great example. If the price of textbooks makes you shudder, TCC offers an awesome Textbook-Free Degree option. Professors who teach textbook-free courses only assign books and other reading materials students can access for free online. So you can currently earn an associate’s degree in business administration without spending a dime on textbooks! Saving money—that’s a sound business decision and life choice. While TCC is only offering the business degree in textbook-free format at this time, you can also take individual courses, like English, that won’t require you to spend your summer savings on books. Further, in summer 2016 the college piloted an accelerated associate’s degree program in general studies. Students who want to transfer to a four-year college a full year earlier can earn this associate’s degree in just one year. Depending on the institution, some students may get to start their second year of college as a junior! But if you’d rather take your time or immerse yourself into a college community, TCC flaunts a long list of vocational and transfer-friendly programs. For starters, you’ll find civil engineering technology, theatre arts, welding, interior design, veterinary assistant, child development, nursing, cyber security, personal training and fitness, maritime technologies, and respiratory therapy. Actually, the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care recognized the respiratory therapy program. It was one of 78 programs in the country (out of over 400) to receive the Distinguished Registered Respiratory Therapist Credentialing Success award. Kudos to TCC!
