While recuperating at a veteran’s hospital in Tucson, politician Bob Dole took classes at the university before heading back to his home state of Kansas. Presidential candidate Barry Goldwater belonged to Sigma Chi fraternity during his time as a UA student.
Tucson is part of the Sonoran Desert located in Southern Arizona and surrounded by five mountain ranges. The 392-acre campus features plenty of cacti and some 500 tree species, including olive trees planted in 1895. In the clock tower of The Student Union Memorial Center sits a bell from the USS Arizona battleship that sank at Pearl Harbor. Students hang out at the popular patio and porch areas of Old Main, the university’s first building.
UA certificate and degree programs online truly run the gamut. Some uncommon disciplines that may surprise you include meteorology, intelligence studies, eSociety, sports and society, and study of American experience. Standouts at the graduate level include business, engineering, and nursing.
The Wildcats compete in 20 NCAA Division I sports in the Pac-12 Conference. They range from the traditional (football and basketball) to the slightly more unusual (sand volleyball). Of the school’s 21 national championships, four have been in baseball and eight were in softball. In 2008, both the men’s and the women’s swimming and diving teams took top honors in the nation.
UA is the only educational institution in Arizona that is a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities. Among its many distinctions are housing the largest collection of children’s and adolescent literature in the world, constructing the world’s first lab dedicated to tree-ring research, and establishing the world’s first department of ecology and evolutionary biology.
