Some of the school’s alumni include president and CEO of Ford Motor Company Alan Mulally, Netscape co-founder Lou Montulli, and Philip Anschutz, the founder of Qwest. Other notable alumni include physicist and fiber optics expert William T. Kane, Clyde Tombaugh, the astronomer who discovered the dwarf planet Pluto, and civil rights attorney Ron Kuby.
The University of Kansas is located on a 1,000 acre campus in an urban setting that allows students to conveniently travel around on campus-provided or public transportation. The school has nine residence halls that have—in addition to amenities like wireless Internet, study spaces, and printing stations—a unique flavor. For example, students in Ellsworth Hall can relax between classes by playing basketball on the courts behind the building or Ping Pong on the main floor. Budding artists can practice their musical instruments in Hashinger Hall’s practice rooms or express themselves on a canvass in the building’s painting room. Similarly, those who live in Lewis Hall can hit the ivories in the piano room.
KU Online offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs, as well as courses for non-degree seeking students. On the undergraduate level, online degrees include RN to BSN, liberal arts, psychology, and respiratory programs. Graduate students can earn degrees online in disciplines like business administration, special education, dietetics and nutrition, social work, nursing, and occupational therapy. No matter what online program students choose, they receive the same quality education as their on-campus counterparts through classes taught by the same professors.
The University of Kansas Jayhawks are the proud winners of eleven NCAA Division I championships, including victories in basketball, indoor and outdoor track, and cross country. They compete in the Big 12 Conference competitions. Other sports at the school include football, golf, women’s softball, swimming, rowing, and volleyball.
The University of Kansas houses the state’s only designated National Cancer Institute, which provides patient care, and conducts clinical trials and other cancer-related research. The school’s Office of Research also runs research centers and institutes that specialize in different disciplines. For example, the Institute for Policy & Social Research conducts studies on social welfare, sociology, environmental studies, and urban planning; the Information and Telecommunication Technology Center focuses on information systems, telecommunications, and bioinformatics; and Hall Center for the Humanities conducts interdisciplinary research on topics related to arts, social sciences, and the humanities.
