How would you like to work through complex social questions with Nobel Prize winners? Add National Book Awards, MacArthur Fellowships, and other top honors to the faculty’s accomplishments. At the University of Washington’s College of Arts and Sciences in the Social Sciences department you’ll do just that. Students are taught by presidential advisers, arts innovators, and principal investigators on major international research projects. These connections led the college to develop innovative partnerships with the community, including summer programs for K-12 teachers, guided stargazing at the Jacobsen Observatory and public art projects in conjunction with government agencies. The career path for individuals with social sciences degrees is not always a clear one, but with formal course work and special programs at UW, the path gets more defined. Examples include a sociology course that offers experiential learning in modern workplaces, an economics mentoring program in which alumni “adopt” undergraduates, communication and political science internships in the State Capitol, and a social sciences career night. You’ll graduate with hands-on experience beyond the degree.
