There is more to becoming a childcare provider than knowing how to make macaroni and cheese and dial 911. A degree in childcare is most often obtained at an associate’s degree level. With this degree, students may study learning methods, child development, and child psychology. Becoming a licensed childcare provider to offer childcare services in one’s home typically only requires a high school diploma and a certification process. This can require taking courses in CPR, first aid, and other training certifications that ensures a child will be safe when left with the caregiver. Child care providers looking for employment in childcare centers may be required to take a certain amount of early childhood development courses or earn an associate or bachelor’s degree in order to act as the primary caretaker. Higher degrees are often required when children are receiving academic instruction along with childcare services.
