Diagnostic medical sonography programs prepare individuals, under the supervision of physicians, to utilize medical ultrasound equipment to gather sonographic data to differentiate healthy areas of the human body from unhealthy ones. Common courses are human anatomy, biology, physiology, ultrasound techniques, and algebra. Training includes a combination of classroom instruction and hands-on lab practice. Students will be required to learn patient care skills, medical ethics, the physics of ultrasound, sonographic data processing, sonography equipment operation, and communication skills necessary to function as a member of the health care team.Future diagnosticians learn the proper terminology, techniques, and protocols employed and must be able to put those skills to use in the career field. Students will obtain, review, and integrate patient histories and data within professional standards. Sonographers have extensive, direct patient contact that includes performing some invasive procedures, so they must always be able to interact compassionately, maturely, and effectively with patients. The profession requires critical thinking skills, excellent judgment, and the ability to provide appropriate health care services. Diagnostic medical sonographers may specialize in obstetric and gynecologic sonography, abdominal sonography, neurosonography, breast sonography, vascular sonography, and cardiac sonography. In addition to generating images, other duties include taking measurements, calculating values, and analyzing results.
